A tragedy shakes the Tunis Transport Company (Transtu). Driver Walid Khsakhoussi died after being attacked while doing his job. The announcement was made this Tuesday, November 4 by the General Transport Federation, part of the UGTT.
A “barbaric act” in the middle of a mission
According to the press release published on the official page of the Federation, the deceased succumbed to his injuries after a violent attack suffered in the exercise of his duties. The union speaks of a “barbaric act” having targeted a worker “in full daily mission, serving the citizen and public transport”.
According to Mosaïque FM, the attack took place a few days ago in Bab Saadoun, where the driver was allegedly attacked with a knife in the neck. He was hospitalized before dying from his injuries.
The union denounces “the silence of the State”
In an emotional message, the Federation deplores a “new tragedy which adds to the series of repeated attacks against public transport agents”, denouncing the silence of the authorities and “the absence of concrete measures” to protect workers in the sector.
“The simple transport worker continues to pay the price of violence and insecurity alone,” writes the Federation, calling for the opening of a serious investigation to establish responsibilities and prevent new tragedies.
The union calls for urgent measures to guarantee the safety of Transtu agents and all public transport staff, believing that these attacks “threaten the lives of workers, human dignity and the right to safe work”.
