The President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed, expressed strong anger at the serious disruptions affecting the air, land and maritime transport sectors. During a meeting with the Minister of Transport at the Carthage Palace, he demanded immediate measures, accountability and the reconstruction of public services that he believes have been deliberately weakened.
President Kaïs Saïed received the Minister of Transport, Rachid Amri, at the Carthage Palace for an interview devoted to the critical situation of public transport.
He denounced dysfunctions deemed unacceptable, particularly in air transport, where massive delays were recorded. The Head of State called for urgent decisions and clear accountability of the faulty parties, according to a press release from the Presidency of the Republic.
Air transport: delays deemed intolerable
Kaïs Saïed affirmed that the repeated delays of flights, both in Tunisian airports and abroad, cannot be justified by any operational or technical criteria. He spoke of extreme situations where passengers waited several days before being able to board, calling these practices a direct attack on citizens’ rights.
The president insisted on the need to immediately put an end to these abuses and punish those responsible.
Tunisair: an institution deliberately weakened
The Head of State recalled that the national company Tunisair has long been a symbol of performance and economic sovereignty.
According to him, the current deterioration of the company is not the result of chance but is the result of choices and maneuvers intended to justify its abandonment or sale. He reaffirmed his categorical refusal of any form of renunciation of strategic public companies.
Land transport: 136 new buses expected
The meeting also focused on the situation of land transport and the solutions envisaged to alleviate the daily difficulties of users. A first tranche of 136 buses must be received soon, before the arrival of new deliveries.
Kaïs Saïed underlined the importance of their maintenance, their good management and their equitable distribution between regions, according to transparent criteria. He also insisted on the urgency of strengthening the light rail fleet with new trains.
Maritime transport: unprecedented acts of sabotage
Addressing the maritime sector, the president denounced acts of deliberate damage observed recently, described as unprecedented. He recalled that any boat must undergo rigorous technical checks before setting out to sea, believing that these failures cannot be considered accidental.
Kaïs Saïed reaffirmed that the State is engaged in a process of rebuilding essential public services, after years of degradation and corruption. He stressed that the right to reliable and dignified transport is not just a matter of legal texts, but is a fundamental human right.
The president concluded by affirming that those responsible for the deterioration of public infrastructure will have to be held accountable, considering that they have damaged not only public finances, but also the dignity and rights of the Tunisian people.
