The prosecution of the Tunis Court of First Instance ordered the opening of a judicial investigation against three lawyers, following complaints filed by the General Committee of Prisons and Re-education (CGPR), reported the TAP agency.
Prosecution for alleged dissemination of false information
According to the CGPR, these complaints were filed after the spread of rumors and false information on social networks, accusing the prison administration of having hidden the deterioration in the state of health of certain prisoners on hunger strike. The committee says these allegations are “completely unfounded.”
The spokesperson for the CGPR, Ramzi Kouki, reaffirmed Tuesday that the state of health of all the prisoners concerned is subject to continuous medical monitoring, ensured by the medical staff of penitentiary establishments and by doctors from public hospitals. He added that the so-called hunger strikes mentioned in some publications have not been confirmed by medical teams.
The CGPR calls for respect for the law and the rights of detainees
The Committee specifies that it has transmitted to the competent authorities documented evidence relating to the information deemed to be false, while affirming its commitment to ensuring respect for the law and guaranteeing equal rights between all detainees.
This case takes place in a climate of tension between certain components of civil society and the prison administration, against a backdrop of recurring debates around detention conditions and the right to defense.
