The UGTT threatens a general strike

During a rally organized Thursday, November 20, the secretary general of the Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT), Noureddine Taboubi, affirmed that the union leadership will stand on the front line to defend workers’ rights, particularly in terms of salary increases. According to him, despite the “economic storms”, the UGTT will remain firm on its demands, as evidenced by recent social movements in several sectors, such as transport, primary education, banks or the food industries.

Taboubi stressed that the refusal to grant an increase to employees in the private sector for the year 2025 is totally unacceptable, particularly in a context marked by rising prices and the deterioration of the purchasing power of Tunisians. The union organization says it is ready to resort to a general strike to defend the social and financial rights of workers as well as their right to organize.

The Secretary General recalled that workers have the right to protect their purchasing power, to face daily difficulties linked to transport, health or the education of their children, and to demand fair remuneration. He insisted on the fact that the UGTT is open to constructive and transparent dialogue, but remains ready to fight against any attempt to call into question the rights and achievements of workers, in accordance with labor legislation.

Finally, Taboubi called for collective awareness of the current economic and social difficulties, affirming the need to inform citizens clearly about the reality of the situation.
