The president of the Tunisian-American Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Marouane Ben Jomaa, revealed that Tunisian exports to the United States reach 1,935 million dinars, while imports from the United States amount to 1,992 million dinars.
However, President Donald Trump’s decision to impose customs duties of 28 % on Tunisian products threatens the competitiveness of several key sectors, including olive oil, dates and crafts.
This measure is deemed particularly penalizing, knowing that other competing countries were only subjected to a 10 %tax.
Faced with this worrying situation, Marouane Ben Jomaa announced that discussions are underway with the American authorities to find a compromise.
He stressed that President Trump had left the door open to negotiations for countries wishing to improve their trade relations with the United States.
