The director general of veterinary services at the Ministry of Agriculture, Wahib Mehri, said that animal plague is still present in Tunisia, with some cases identified.
He added that the Tunisian state aims to eradicate it by 2030, thanks to a program funded by international health organizations.
Mehri underlined to Mosaic FM that this eradication program can only be carried out by Tunisian efforts, but requires international mobilization within the framework of a global vaccination program. He assured that the vaccination system in Tunisia is very efficient compared to that of neighboring countries.
He also recalled that Tunisia has always been proactive in the fight against animal epidemics, such as nodular dermatosis, ovine smallpox and rage. To this end, he cited the vaccination campaigns carried out by veterinary services last year, which proved their effectiveness.
Finally, the director general of veterinary services confirmed that ten deaths due to rabies were recorded last year, due to the proliferation of stray animals in the country.
