The “Nawaat” site suspended for a month

The National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) reacted with deep concern to the one-month suspension of the “Nawaat” site, seeing it as “a new episode in the policy of stifling civil society and independent media.”

In a press release published this Friday, the SNJT considers that “the decision to freeze the activity of the association is part of a deliberate strategy of restriction of freedom of organization”.

He recalls that “Nawaat” underwent more than a year of in-depth financial verification and provided all the supporting documents requested by the authorities, in accordance with Law 88 of 2011 governing associations.

The SNJT considers that “the suspension of “Nawaat” represents an attempt to silence one of the main independent investigative media in Tunisia, and a direct attack against the right of journalists to exercise freely.”

The SNJT concludes by expressing its full solidarity with the journalists of “Nawaat”, and announces that it will take all legal and field actions necessary to defend their right to work freely and protect media plurality.
