The national chambers of collectors and plastic recycling in Tunisia expressed, during a press conference, their concern in the face of the degradation of the Eco-Lef system, a public system for recovery and enhancement of used packaging.
This system, funded by the depollution fund, encounters serious difficulties, in particular due to the increase in used plastic supply costs and competition from the parallel sector. Since 2004, the number of companies in the sector has increased from 180 to 30, and many recycling companies are likely to close.
Managers call for an urgent revision of the supply price and an intervention by the authorities, in particular the Minister of the Environment and the National Waste Management Agency (Anged), who did not respond to their requests.
At the same time, plastic pollution costs around 60 million dinars to the Tunisian economy each year, with nearly 500,000 tonnes of plastic rejected in the sea, aggravating the environmental crisis.
This context highlights the importance of the Eco-Lef system for the recycling and enhancement of plastic waste, whose sustainability is now threatened.
