THE National Council of Regions and Districts reacted with firmness, Monday, September 8, 2025, to the information relayed on the examination by the American Congress of a bill proposing to impose sanctions on Tunisia with regard to a “democratic decline”.

In an official press release, the institution denounced an initiative carried by two American elected officials – one republican and the other democrat – known, according to the text, for their “allegiance to the Zionist lobbies”. The Council considers that this approach illustrates a persistent will of certain spheres of influence in Washington “to impose policies of domination on peoples”, while closing eyes on violations committed “in the name of human rights and democracy”.

The press release also establishes a link between this political offensive and the campaign carried out internationally against Tunisia, in which, according to the Council, of the “internal parts” which have lost their privileges, after the changes started by July 25, 2021.

Reaffirming that “sovereignty, independence of decision and the dignity of the Tunisian people are intangible constants”, the Council recalls that the political choices initiated by the President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed, reflect “the sincere expression of the popular will to emancipate himself from all foreign guardianship”.

The text also underlines that Tunisia remains attached to the principle of non-interference in the affairs of other states and intends to develop diversified partnerships, on the basis of mutual respect and shared interest, with the exception of the “Zionist occupation”, described as “threat to humanity”.

Finally, the Council calls on Tunisians to “tighten the ranks” and to be vigilant in the face of what it considers a direct attack on national sovereignty. He concludes by welcoming the ability of the people to “stand up again in the bulwark of freedom and national dignity”.
