The overall filling rate of the dams in Tunisia is currently 40.7%, announced Hamadi Habaieb, secretary of state in charge of hydraulic resources, during a declaration made on the sidelines of the inauguration of the Tunisian farmer’s market, organized at the headquarters of the Tunisian Union of Agriculture and Fisheries (UTAP).

According to the figures communicated, the water reserves have reached 965 million cubic meters, an evolution deemed positive, especially in a context marked by several years of drought. The manager stressed that the water situation has improved significantly thanks to precipitation recorded in the majority of the country’s regions.

The current season promises to be much better than the previous ones, both in terms of water resources and income generated by the dams, “said Hamadi Habaieb.

Proactive management in the face of shortages

Aware of the pressures exerted on hydraulic resources, the Ministry of Agriculture has strengthened field visits, especially in the areas most affected by water supply problems. Several actions have been taken to compensate for these difficulties: drilling new wells, electrification of water points, but also awareness campaigns of water saving.

These efforts are part of an integrated water resources management strategy, supported by a partnership program with the Ministry of Tourism and Crafts. The objective is to meet the growing needs of the agricultural, industrial and domestic sectors while preserving long -term hydrological balances.

A situation to follow closely

Despite this upturn, the authorities remain cautious. The current filling rate, although improvement, remains lower than the historical average, and rigorous management remains essential to deal with the effects of climate change, population growth and increased irrigation needs.
