Brussels has validated a partial exemption from the rules of origin for clothing made in Tunisia and exported to the European Union. A measure welcomed by the Tunisian textile federation.

The European Commission officially adopted, on July 24, 2025, a measure of derogation from the rules of origin applicable to Tunisian textile products (T-shirts, pants, dresses, etc.).

Exemption from customs duties

This decision, announced Thursday by the Tunisian Federation of Textiles and Clothing (FTTH), allows Tunisian exporters to benefit from an exemption from customs duties in European markets.

The FTTH praised a “strategic measure” which strengthens the competitiveness of the Tunisian textile industry internationally. It should allow local businesses to expand their margins and stimulate employment in the sector. On the European side, this decision is part of bilateral cooperation aimed at boosting exchanges.

Until December 31, 2029

The derogation applies retroactively from January 22, 2025 and remains in force until December 31, 2029. It is part of the EU-Tunisia Association Agreement, which facilitates preferential exchanges between the two parties.

At the end of May 2025, 87% of Tunisian exports in the textile-dwelling sector were intended for the European market.
