The first criminal chamber of the Tunis Court has delivered its verdict in one of the country’s most important cases of judicial corruption. The former president of the Court of Cassation, Taïeb Rached, received 30 years in prison, as did businessman Fethi Jenayah, while other defendants were sentenced to sentences ranging from 4 to 27 years.
A case of corruption at the top of justice
The first criminal chamber of the Tunis Court of First Instance, specializing in financial corruption cases, delivered its judgment late in the night of Monday October 27.
The former president of the Court of Cassation, Taïeb Rached, was sentenced to 30 years in prison with a fine of 4,807,068,920 dinars. Two other magistrates dismissed, Abderrazak Yahouri and Marouane Tlili each receive 20 years in prison.
As for the businessmen involved, Nejib Ismail was sentenced to 27 years in prison and a fine equivalent to 14,824,740,080 dinarscorresponding to confiscation. Fethi Jenayah, on the run, was sentenced to 30 years in prison with immediate execution and a fine of 2,330,424,134 dinars.
His brother, Adel Jenayah, sentenced to 2 years in prison and 177,437,784 dinars finewhile Kamel Tabboubi, a real estate mediator, is sentenced to 14 years in prison and a fine of 2,330,424,134 dinars.
Finally, Ouardi Nouisri, also on the run, was sentenced to 6 years in prison and a fine of 89,002,551 dinars.
Financial reparation for the Tunisian state
The court also ordered Taïeb Rached, Fethi Jenayah, Abderrazak Yahouri and Marouane Tlili to pay to the Tunisian state the sum of 935,183,948 dinars as compensation for material damage.
This affair, revealed several years ago, marks a turning point in the fight against corruption in the judicial sector. The indictment chamber of the Tunis Court of Appeal confirmed the closure of the investigation and referred Taïeb Rached to justice for corruption, illicit enrichment and abuse of office.
