The Assembly of People’s Representatives will begin this Wednesday, November 5, the examination of the draft state budget for the 2026 financial year. These discussions, which promise to be dense and decisive, will be held in a joint session with the National Council of Regions and Districts, the second chamber of Parliament.
The head of government, Sarra Zaafrani Zenzeri, will open the proceedings with an official declaration presenting the main orientations of the 2026 budget. She will intervene after the opening speeches of the presidents of the two legislative chambers.
According to a press release from Parliament, the inaugural session will also give rise to the presentation of reports prepared by the Finance and Budget Committee of the Assembly of People’s Representatives, as well as that of the National Council of Regions and Districts.
Three weeks of intense discussions
The budget calendar provides for a detailed examination of the draft budgets of the various ministries and special missions until November 23.
The debates will then focus on the 2026 finance bill, the adoption of which will end the parliamentary marathon. This annual sequence constitutes a key moment in the Tunisian institutional calendar, where economic visions, social priorities and financial recovery strategies collide.
A political and economic test
Beyond the budgetary technique, these debates promise to be a major political test for the government. In a context marked by persistent financial constraints and high social expectations, the executive will have to convince parliamentarians of the coherence and feasibility of its budgetary plan.
The presentation of the 2026 project should therefore specify the priority areas of economic policy, the expected tax reforms and the measures to rationalize public spending envisaged for the coming year.
