Standoff around torture charges

The Bizerte detainee case, suspected of having undergone acts of torture, continues to arouse controversy. While the Ministry of Justice formally denies these allegations, the national order of lawyers calls for a complete and transparent investigation, pleading for the establishment of the truth.

It all started with the publication, on social networks, of a photo accompanied by serious accusations according to which a prisoner incarcerated in Bizerte prison was the victim of ill -treatment. The information was relayed by the prisoner’s lawyer, who spoke of a suspicion of torture and disseminated images to support his remarks.

Faced with this wave of online indignation, the Ministry of Justice reacted on Sunday May 4, 2025 in an official statement, saying that the facts relayed were unfounded. The ministry specifies that the prosecution of the Bizerte Court of First Instance ordered, as of May 2, the immediate appearance of the detainee concerned. The latter was examined in the presence of a representative of the public prosecutor, who has not found any trace of violence on his body, according to an official report.

The ministry adds that the photo broadcast does not actually concern the prisoner in question. It would date from 2017 and would be linked to a case that occurred in another country, used here in a “deliberately deceptive” way in the aim of “sowing confusion” in public opinion. He also announced the opening of legal proceedings against the alleged perpetrators of this disinformation.

Despite these details, the Council of the Association of Lawyers published, this Monday, May 5, a press release calling for the whole light on the case. The institution reaffirmed its commitment to the truth, emphasizing the need to wait for the results of surveys, expertise and court decisions.

She also expressed her total support for the lawyer who represents the detainee, saying that he is ready to initiate all the legal procedures to defend his sister and the principles of the rule of law.

The General Inspectorate of Prisons was also mobilized. She claims to have carried out the necessary checks, heard all the parties concerned and concluded in the absence of any ill -treatment index.
