Schengen trip: what Tunisians should know

The European Union will implement the Input/output system (EES)a border control device intended for non -European nationals traveling for short stays in the Schengen areawhich brings together 29 European countries.

This system aims at Make trips to Europe more efficient and secure. Operations will start the October 12, 2025date on which the data will start to be collected at the crossing points of the border of the participating countries. The system should be fully operational by April 10, 2026.

The EES operates as a control at the external boundaries of the European Union and collects:

  • the information already present in the travel document,
  • the date and place of each entry and exit,
  • as well as biometric data.

With a population of 450 million inhabitants, the countries of the Schengen space have removed internal border controls, creating a Free movement area For citizens, residents and visitors. EES thus becomes a central element for simplified border management and strengthening internal security.

What will change for a Tunisian traveler?

Concretely, changes relate to several aspects:

  1. Biometric data collection
    Travelers will have to provide a photo and their fingerprints at each passage to the border. This data is added to the information already present on the passport.
  2. Recording of entries and exits
    The EES will register automatically The date and place of entry and exitwhich will precisely follow the length of the stay and avoid visa overruns.
  3. Faster and secure border controls
    The checks will be Automated and digitizedgradually replacing the manual stamp on the passport. This will make the transition to the borders more fluidwhile strengthening security.
