The accusation chamber of the Tunis Court of Appeal rejected this Thursday the request for release presented by the defense of Me Ahmed Souab, lawyer and former administrative magistrate, imprisoned since April 23 as part of a judicial information opened by the anti -terrorist pole.
In a press release, the lawyer of lawyers responsible for his defense declared himself “deeply surprised” by this decision, denouncing what he describes as “arbitrary detention”. Lawyers reiterate their commitment to continue the defense of Me Souab, which they consider “targeted” because of its public commitment to rights and freedoms.
The request for liberation, examined yesterday, followed the refusal of the investigating judge to decide on a first appeal filed after the arrest of Me Souab on April 21. Two days later, a deposit warrant was issued against him for acts qualified as “terrorists”, following a declaration filmed in front of the lawyer’s house, in which he criticized the criminal chamber specializing in terrorism affairs.
The Defense Committee stresses that Me Souab is prosecuted for its opinions and its militancy in favor of respecting the guarantees of a fair trial and the primacy of law.
