During a ceremony at the Ministry of Health, Minister Mustapha Ferjani and Saudi Ambassador Abdulaziz bin Ali Al-Saqr signed the contract for the construction of the new King Salman Ibn Abdelaziz University Hospital.
The signing marks the effective launch of a major project in Kairouan. The project provides for a facility with 320 beds expandable to 500, on 15 hectares of land, for a total cost of $144 million.
A project with high hospital capacity
The work, entrusted to already selected companies, will start in the coming days. The hospital will bring together all medical specialties, with the aim of becoming one of the largest university hospital centers in the Central West. The ministry emphasizes that this infrastructure will meet a growing demand for specialized care in the region.
Mostly Saudi funding
Of the $144 million needed, $84 million is being financed by Saudi Arabia. Ambassador Abdulaziz bin Ali Al-Saqr reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting Tunisian health projects, indicating that this partnership is part of a dynamic of strategic cooperation between Tunis and Riyadh.
The project, announced in 2017, had experienced several successive delays. In a region facing persistent pressure on its hospital structures, the opening of this establishment is expected to be a turning point. It should reduce patient transfers to Sousse or the capital and sustainably strengthen the healthcare offering.
