Nabeul: a brutally arrested bus driver, the union goes up to the front

Tuesday, April 22, 2025, a muscular arrest in Nabeul caused a wave of indignation after the broadcast of videos showing police officers violently mastering Maher Beltaïef, bus driver under the regional transport company of Nabeul.

The images quickly circulated on social networks, showing the man driving manu militari to a cabin installed on the sidewalk, before being embarked in an ambulance. Passers -by, shocked by the scene, shouted in injustice and surrounded the cabin to show their support for the driver.

Faced with the magnitude of the controversy, the General Federation of Transport published a press release the next day, expressing its deep concern and dissatisfaction. She denounces an unacceptable verbal and physical assault perpetrated by agents of the police while the driver was in full exercise of his functions. The union condemns an act which, according to him, seriously affects the dignity of public service workers.

In its call, the Federation insists on the need for an urgent, impartial and in -depth investigation to elucidate the facts and sanction those responsible. It challenges interior and transport ministries in order to set up strict protocols guaranteeing the protection of agents in service and preventing any form of violence or humiliation.

A few hours after the incident, Maher Beltaïef delivered his version of the facts via a Facebook publication. According to his testimony, the police asked him to stop outside an official judgment to let them go up on board, which he refused by respect for the regulations. He claims that this refusal would have triggered the brutal intervention.

“I am relatively well, even if I am psychologically exhausted by the injustice I have suffered,” he wrote. He thanks the citizens who have supported him and warns his colleagues: “If you refuse, your papers can be confiscated and it could happen to you what happened to me …” he concludes, calling for a collective awareness.

The case is today in the hands of the authorities.
