The new figures revealed by the National Road Safety Observatory show a worrying development: the road causes more deaths in 2025 despite a slight drop in the total number of accidents.
Colonel-Major Haythem Chaabani presented this data on Mosaïque FM, pointing out a notable increase in the severity of collisions. The situation highlights the persistence of a deadly phenomenon, despite campaigns and preventive measures.
A year marked by a statistical paradox
Since the start of 2025 and until December 9, Tunisia has recorded 4,942 accidents causing 1,145 deaths and 6,553 injuries. The figures show a decline in the volume of accidents but mortality up 5% compared to 2024, while injuries increase by around 1%. The consolidated data reveals a contradiction: fewer collisions, but more victims.
The ONSR confirms an increased violence in road accidents. Fatal accidents totaled 1,009 cases, causing 1,145 deaths and 788 injuries alone, reflecting a significantly higher lethality than in previous years. The increase in gravity thus becomes the dominant marker of the year 2025.
Governorates particularly affected
The territorial distribution reveals a striking concentration of the deadliest accidents. Tunis comes first with 110 fatal accidents, or 11% of the national total. Sfax follows with 98 cases, then Nabeul (72) and Medenine (71). These four governorates alone account for 34% of all fatal accidents recorded in the country.
The drop in the overall number of accidents could suggest an improvement. However, the increase in mortality reminds us that the efforts made have not yet succeeded in stopping the increasing danger of the road network.
