Following the tragic collapse of a part of the wall of the secondary school in Mazzouna, in the governorate of Sidi Bouzid, which cost the life of three students and injured two other, several political parties reacted strongly by denouncing the failure of the public authorities at all levels. They call for transparency, accountability and urgent reform of the education system.

Calls for political responsibility

The al-Joumhouri party expressed, on Monday, its “deep indignation” in the face of this drama which it describes as a direct consequence of prolonged institutional negligence. He held the presidency of the Republic as well as the government responsible for both moral and politically, the alarming degradation of public schools.

Requirement for an independent judicial inquiry

For its part, the popular current called for the immediate opening of a judicial inquiry to determine the responsibilities, not only at the local level, but also regional and national. The party considers this incident as a revealer of a structural crisis which affects the entire education system, in particular in the marginalized regions of the interior of the country.

Ennahdha pleads for a national rehabilitation plan

The Ennahdha movement, for its part, firmly condemned “the chronic negligence” of the authorities, believing that this disaster could have been avoided if the school infrastructure had been regularly inspected and renovated. The party calls for the emergency development of a national rehabilitation plan for public educational establishments, in order to prevent future dramas.

Al-Massar claims a global reform of the education system

The Al-Massar party highlighted the extent of the crisis that the Tunisian public school is going through, marked by the lack of maintenance, the lack of follow-up and insufficient budgets. According to him, this drama highlights the urgency of launching an in -depth reform of the education system, including both the improvement of infrastructure, teacher training and the revision of educational content.

The Destourien Libre party denounces a general failure

As for the Destourien Libre Party (PDL), he pointed out the total abandonment of schools by the State, accusing the authorities of not ensuring the safety of students, teachers and administrative executives. The PDL believes that this drama is the foreseeable result of years of laxity, especially in schools in a situation of extreme dilapidation.

A revealing drama of national discomfort

The collapse on Monday April 14, 2025 in Mezzouna is not an isolated case. It comes to illustrate the state of advanced dilapidation of a large number of schools in Tunisia, in particular in rural and disadvantaged regions. According to recent figures, more than 4,500 schools out of the 6102 that the country has required urgent work.

Two of the victims died on the scene of the drama, while the third died of its injuries en route to the regional hospital. Two other injured students are still in care, their condition is stable.

This drama caused a shock wave throughout the country, giving rise to a general strike in Mazzouna, to tribute ceremonies, but also to a vast movement of protest demanding truth, justice and concrete reforms.
