The President of the Kaïs Saïed Republic received, Thursday, July 10, 2025, the Minister of the Environment Habib Obeid at the Palais de Carthage. He ordered immediate actions against environmental damage, especially on the coasts. This meeting intervenes the day after a surprise night visit to the head of state on several beaches seriously affected by marine pollution.

An environmental crisis under the spotlight

During the night of July 9 to 10, Kaïs Saïed went without notice to several coastal areas of Monastir, Kélibia and Menzel Temime to see with his own eyes the extent of the damage. Between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m., he inspected several polluted beaches, including that of Ksibet El Mediouni, invaded by organic and industrial waste. On the spot, residents expressed their anger at the continuous degradation of their living environment, denouncing the inaction of the local authorities.

The president then visited the treatment plant of Sayada-Lamta-Bouhjar, accused of rejecting water insufficiently treated in the sea. He also went to Sayada, where pollution directly threatens fishing activities and tourism. At the end of his tour, he inspected sensitive sites in Kélibia and Menzel Temime, in particular to Oued Lahjar and Aïn Grenz.

A few hours later, during his meeting with the Minister of the Environment, the president recalled that the right to a healthy environment is a fundamental human right, guaranteed by the Constitution. He demanded the implementation of urgent measures, in coordination with all the parties concerned, in order to protect the coast and end the persistent environmental assaults.

Firmness displayed in the face of impunity

Through this mobilization, Kaïs Saïed reaffirmed his desire to break up with impunity for environmental crimes. “All those who have contributed to this situation, directly or indirectly, will have to respond to it before the courts. There will be no immunity or impunity, “he said in a video relayed by Radio Monastir.
