Legal migration: a Tunisian trade unionist in Italy calls on Tunis to act quickly

In a statement published today by the TAP agency, Tunisian trade unionist Hédi Khairat, member of the executive office of the metallurgical sector within the CGIL (main Italian union center), called on the Tunisian authorities to initiate immediate diplomatic action in order to guarantee Tunisia a permanent share in the new Italian program of legal migration 2026-2028.

The system provides for the integration of 497,550 non -European workers over three years, including nearly 165,000 each year, in tension sectors such as health, building, transport or agriculture. According to Khairat, quoted by TAP, Tunisia must act before the other 31 partner countries so as not to be excluded from a device of this magnitude.

Still according to his statements to the TAP, he warned against the multiplication of fictitious contracts proposed by pseudo-intermediaries, to the detriment of desperate young Tunisians.

He recalls that only official channels – via Italian employment offices or supervised bilateral agreements – offer the necessary guarantees for a legal and secure migration route.

In addition, Hédi Khairat has already spoke publicly on the theme of Tunisia-Italy political and economic relations: at the beginning of 2023, he recommended that Tunisia recommended to re-examine his diplomatic links with Rome in order to increase the Tunisian labor quota in Italian migratory programs.

Between proactive diplomacy and vigilance in the face of drifts, Khairat invites Tunisia to take the legal migratory train on the march – otherwise she could remain spectator.
