The President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed, received Wednesday August 20, 2025 at the Palais de Carthage the governor of the Central Bank of Tunisia, Fethi Zouhair Nouri, who gave him the annual report of the institution for the year 2024.

This meeting was marked by a firm call from the head of state to a reform of the banking sector and better consistency with the economic choices of the State.

During the interview, the president recalled the fundamental role of the central bank, not only in monetary policy, but also in support for the national economy. He insisted on the need to distinguish “independence” and “separation”, believing that certain choices had to be revised in depth.

Kaïs Saïed stressed that self -sufficiency and refusal of foreign interference had already proven their effectiveness. He also mentioned the role of the financial analysis committee, responsible for fighting corruption, money laundering and the leak of capital abroad.

Regarding the banking sector, the president has been categorical: “certain practices must disappear” and “many banks must apply state policy”. He urged public banks and private to contribute more to investment and facilitate citizens’ transactions.
