The Kais Saied President called on Monday to a recast of Tunisian laws in all sectors, castigating administrative slowness and internal blockages. He also denounced the influence of certain lobbies and announced an ongoing restructuring of several public institutions.
During a meeting held Monday evening with the government’s heading, Sarra Zaafrani Zenzri, the President of the Republic, Kais Saied, called for the development of new legislation covering all the sectors in Tunisia, believing that current laws no longer allow to meet the challenges of the moment.
In a declaration published late in the evening by the Presidency of the Republic, the Head of State said that “Tunisia needs a new legislative framework” to stimulate a dynamic in public services and get out of blockages that slow down the proper functioning of the administration.
Against bureaucratic slowness
The president has castigated the abusive use of “respect for procedures” as a pretext intended, according to him, to delay the files and to voluntarily harm the citizens. “It is unacceptable that civil servants invoke legality to block the interests of the people. Laws must be a public service lever, not a paralysis tool, “he said.
Kais Saied also insisted on the importance of the commitment of public executives. He called for a new generation of managers “endowed with a real sense of responsibility, capable of overcoming obstacles, in contrast to certain common practices in several services”.
A restructuring of current institutions
In a barely veiled criticism of certain circles of influence, the president recalled that “wages are paid with the money of the people” and that these resources must be exclusively devoted to its service. He warned against the actions of “lobbies operating in the shadows” and called to end conflicts of interest within the administration.
The Head of State concluded by affirming that work is underway to restructure several public institutions. “These structures must imperatively regain their primary vocation and work to achieve the objectives for which they were created,” he added.
