The President of the Republic reaffirmed, Tuesday evening, a demanding vision of the role of culture in Tunisia. Received at the Palais de Carthage, Minister Amina Srarfi was called upon to place artistic festivals and events as part of the struggles for freedom. A statement that comes in a climate of tension around the cancellation of the Hélène Ségara concert.

What happened

The meeting took place on July 9 at the presidential palace. According to the press release published at 3 a.m. on the official Facebook page of the presidency, the Head of State recalled that “culture is part of the sovereignty sectors” and cannot be summed up at “festivals or seasonal exhibitions of a few days or weeks”.

He stressed, expressly quoting:

“Any cultural or artistic manifestation must be part of the causes of freedom and liberation, not only in Tunisia, but around the world. »»

Reactions and timing

These statements come the day after the announcement by the Carthage International Festival of the cancellation of the concert by the French singer Hélène Ségara, initially scheduled for July 31. A decision taken in a climate of criticism on social networks, where Internet users have criticized the artist of the pre-Israeli positions.

The festival press release does not mention these accusations. Hélène Ségara, contacted by AFP, said: “I learn the cancellation of a concert that I have never signed. No concert was planned. »»
