While several political organizations and parties, including the National Salvation Front, have recently called for demonstrations to denounce the country’s political and economic situation, the Tunisian Labor Union (UGTT) wanted to dissociate itself from these mobilizations, especially those planned since the emblematic place of Mohamed Ali Hammi in Tunis.
While reiterating his attachment to the right to demonstrate and protest peacefully, the union underlined his commitment to continue the coordination with the components of civil society around common causes, on the basis of principles shared with the organizations and associations concerned.
The UGTT has also launched an appeal to respect for the symbolism of Mohamed Ali Square, a high place in Tunisian union history, urging not to instrumentalize this space or go beyond union structures, or seek to put them in difficulty or to disturb their action.
Finally, the union center strongly denounced what it describes as “defamation and incentive campaigns” led by certain supporters of power and other hostile actors, against the union organization, under the terms of the press release.
