The criminal chamber of the Court of Appeal of Tunis confirmed the guilt of the former secretary general of the union of judicial agents and employees, Hattab Ben Othmane, while revising downwards the prison sentence handed down at first instance.
The court also ruled on the fate of three other union members prosecuted in the same case. The case concerns accusations of a financial and administrative nature linked to the management of the union structure.
Revamped sentences
In its judgment, the Court of Appeal upheld the conviction of Hattab Ben Othmane, clerk at the Court of First Instance of Tunis, while proceeding with a reduction of the custodial sentence, reduced to ten years and three months in prison, accompanied by financial sanctions, reports Mosaique fm.
In December 2024, the criminal chamber of the court of first instance of Tunis sentenced him to fourteen years and three months in prison, as well as financial fines of more than 650,000 dinars.
The court also upheld the conviction of three other union members. For one of them, the sentence was reduced from five years and three months to three years and three months’ imprisonment. Another defendant had his sentence reduced to two years in prison, while a fourth defendant was sentenced to three years and three months, in accordance with the first instance decision.
Prosecutions linked to the management of the union
The defendants were tried on several charges, including real estate speculation, fundraising without legal authorization, as well as falsification of documents, possession and use of forged documents and other related offenses.
According to the elements of the file, these facts occurred within the framework of the administrative and financial management of the union of agents and employees of the justice system, a period during which the defendants held union responsibilities.
