National Guard spokesperson Houssemeddine Jebabli said National Guard units managed, during recent protests in Gabès governorate, to protect the headquarters of the Tunisian Chemical Group and secure around 100,000 tons of dangerous materials, which could have caused a catastrophe if “sabotager groups” had managed to infiltrate among the demonstrators to attack the facility.

Speaking on the main television news on the first national channel, Jebabli stressed “the importance of the role of honest citizens” in preventing any attempt of infiltration by certain troublemakers, who attempted to exploit the environmental file in the region for personal, internal or external ends. He specified that these individuals are known to the security services and the justice system and are currently being monitored. Investigations and investigations have been opened with a view to bringing them to justice.

The spokesperson also indicated that calm has returned to all regions of the governorate of Gabès, after the wave of protests in recent days, thanks to the efforts made by the security forces and the contribution of residents.

Regarding the arrests, Jebabli specified that the prosecution only ordered the detention of two people, involved in common law cases, while the others arrested were left at liberty pending their presentation in court.

He added that the security units ensured the protection of all peaceful demonstrations and marches organized by the citizens of Gabès, in accordance with the Constitution. However, he stressed that attacks were recorded against the police, with the use of around 500 incendiary smoke bombs, 800 Molotov cocktails, as well as bladed weapons and other dangerous means. Acts of violence, looting and attacks on public and private property were also recorded.
