In front of Parliament, citizens denounce the continued killing of stray dogs

A spontaneous rally took place in front of the Assembly of People’s Representatives. Volunteers involved in animal rights protested against the slaughter operations, calling for alternative solutions based on sterilization and vaccination.

Citizen mobilization against the shootings

A group of citizens active in the rescue and protection of stray animals met this Saturday near Parliament to denounce the continuation of slaughter operations.

The demonstrators brandished signs and chanted several slogans, including “No to shooting, enough of the cartridges”, “They have the right to live”, or even “For sterilization and vaccination… Stop the massacre of dogs in Tunisia”.

In a statement to Mosaïque, volunteer Fatma Jendoubi called for an immediate end to these interventions, described as daily and particularly violent. She claims that many animals are fatally affected, while others, seriously injured, are removed “brutally” by municipal services.

The paths advocated by the protesters

Rally participants insisted that shootings are not a lasting solution. They are calling for a global strategy including vaccination, sterilization and the creation of shelters for stray dogs, in coordination with several municipalities.

According to Fatma Jendoubi, sterilization would both control uncontrolled reproduction and limit the spread of rabies, a persistent threat to public health.

The authorities defend a mixed approach to proliferation

The governorate of Tunis recently announced a targeted program to capture and kill stray dogs, particularly at city entrances, in tourist areas, parks and gardens.

During a meeting devoted to monitoring the regional plan against rabies and nuisances, the authorities also retained sterilization as a complementary mechanism. They indicate that the vaccination rate of domestic dogs and cats has reached 80% according to the regional directorate of Agriculture.
