A resident doctor at Habib Bourguiba hospital in Sfax was attacked on Saturday evening by a citizen during his guard. Injured in the head, he had to be placed under medical supervision. In response, the Tunisian organization of young doctors called for a protest sit-in this Monday, August 18, 2025 in the hospital.
According to the declaration published by the Tunisian organization of young doctors, the assault took place within the grounds of the Habib Bourguiba hospital. The resident doctor, victim of physical violence, suffers from head injuries. The incident aroused deep indignation in the medical profession, which denounces the repetition of such attacks in health structures.
Judicial approaches
The organization announces that it will start judicial approaches and use all forms of legal protest to defend the dignity and security of doctors.
The young doctors also denounce the “silence” of the officials and urged the management of the hospital to assume its responsibilities by setting up a permanent presence of security agents, as well as a real legal support for interns and residents.
The Ministry of Health, for its part, had already firmly condemned violence against caregivers after a similar assault on June 29 at the Kasserine Regional Hospital. He had promised a strengthening of security, especially in emergency services.

Assuming against caregivers in Tunisian hospitals have been increasing for several years, highlighting failure in hospital security. Faced with these incidents, unions and medical associations have long demanded firm measures to protect health personnel.
