The president of the Italian Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, made this working visit this Thursday, July 31, 2025 in Tunisia, announced the Presidency of the Tunisian Republic, announces the Presidency of the Republic.

This visit, although brief, is part of the continuity of a regular and strategic dialogue between Tunis and Rome, two partners linked by common issues: migration, energy, economic cooperation and stability in the Mediterranean.

It occurs a few months after the successive trips of senior Italian officials in Tunisia, including that of Giorgia Meloni herself in June 2023 as part of the “Matignon process” for regional stability.

This visit also takes place as part of the Mattei Plan which is an initiative of the Italian government, led by Giorgia Meloni, aimed at redefining and strengthening the presence and influence of Italy in Africa. It takes its name from Enrico Mattei, founder of Eni, and focuses on a renewed partnership with African countries, in particular in the fields of energy, education, agriculture, health and water.

The Italian government’s heading then engaged, alongside the European Commission, to support a global cooperation agreement with Tunis, especially on the migration and short -term economic support. Tunisia, for its part, had praised “a respectful approach” and “unjustified” of Italy, contrasting with certain reluctance of other European partners.

This new visit comes in a context where migration flows from the Tunisian coast to Italy remain a subject of tension, and where Rome seeks to strengthen a strategy of prevention by economic development and institutional support for its South Mediterranean partners.
