The General Committee of Prisons and Reeducation on Wednesday rejected rumors circulating on social networks according to which the state of health of certain prisoners on hunger strike had worsened. According to its spokesperson, Ramzi Kouki, daily medical examinations confirm that the situation of the prisoners concerned remains “stable”.
Speaking to the TAP agency, Ramzi Kouki affirmed that the medical and paramedical teams of the penitentiary establishments provide daily monitoring of all the hunger strikers. He insisted on the fact that the right to health and care is guaranteed to all detainees, in accordance with the legislation in force.
The General Committee of Prisons and Reeducation has also initiated legal proceedings against any person who deliberately disseminated false information on the health situation in detention.
The LTDH points to the responsibility of the authorities
Earlier today, the Tunisian Human Rights League (LTDH) issued a statement in which it held the executive and judicial authorities “fully responsible” for the life and security of Jawhar Ben Mbarek, a member of the National Salvation Front, currently on hunger strike.
The League calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all those detained for political reasons and demands that they benefit from a public and fair trial. She also insists on the need to guarantee access to care and respect for human dignity in places of detention.
According to the National Salvation Front, Jawhar Ben Mbarek and Sayed Ferjani, leader of the Ennahda Movement, began their hunger strike at the end of October to protest against their conditions of detention and demand their release.
