A joint team of the Ministries of Industry and the Environment today began inspection and census operations within the Gabès chemical group.
The objective is to implement an equipment renovation program and identify malfunctions, National Radio reported.
THE inhabitants of Gabès have been calling for several months for a lasting solution to the repeated gas leaks coming from the complex, which have recently caused several cases of asphyxiation.
For his part, the environmental activist Firas Nasfi affirmed this Monday that the protest movements led by the inhabitants of Gabes against the alarming deterioration of the environmental situation “are peaceful and will continue”. He nevertheless stressed that the incident of attempted fire and ransacking of the regional headquarters of the Tunisian Chemical Group remains “isolated and represents only a minority among the protesters”.
For their part, the complex workers called for speed up maintenance work and to take charge of all production units to guarantee the security and continuity of operations.
