In recent days, Tunisia has experienced one of the most spectacular climatic shifts in decades. The expert in development and water resources, Hussein Rahili, indicated that this is an exceptional “Tunisian climatic oscillation”, a phenomenon that the country has not experienced for 33 years. It also recalls that the month of October 2025 was the hottest globally in more than 50 years.
Speaking on Jawhara FM, Rahili explained that temperatures fell, in less than 48 hours, from 37°C on October 26 to between 0 and 3°C, a brutal contrast rarely observed. According to him, the decline will continue between Tuesday and Friday, with potentially heavy rains in several regions.
Regarding dams, the expert deplores the absence of official data since October 10 despite their strategic importance. However, he estimates the current filling rate between 24.5% and 25%, a level higher than that of last year which did not exceed 19.6%, a difference of around 132 million m³. The expected contributions — between 15 and 20 million m³ — could help partially reduce the deficit.
Climate transparency
Rahili finally called for fully integrating rapid climate transformations into water management and adaptation policies, warning that these extreme phenomena could become more frequent.
The specialist finally calls for total transparency in the communication of water data, believing that rational and anticipatory management requires permanent public access to strategic information. An essential condition, according to him, to face the climatic challenges which promise to be increasingly complex.
