French justice on Wednesday requested additional information from the Tunisian authorities in the context of the case targeting Halima Ben Ali, the youngest daughter of former president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. A first hearing was held in Paris to examine the possibility of his extradition to Tunisia.
According to consistent information, the public prosecutor at the investigating chamber specializing in surrender cases officially requested clarification from Tunis. This request comes before a new hearing set for December 10.
The charges against Halima Ben Ali relate to financial crimes, including suspicion of money laundering. The French magistrate also requested elements relating to the limitation period for certain alleged acts, a crucial point which could influence the admissibility of the extradition request.
Back to the facts
Halima Ben Ali was recently arrested in a French airport as she was preparing to board for Dubai, where she lived and worked.
This new legal step now places Tunisia faced with the obligation to provide precise and complete data if it wishes to see its surrender request succeed. The outcome will largely depend on the ability of the Tunisian authorities to respond quickly and in detail to the requests of the French prosecutor’s office.
