Former MP Rached Khiari released from prison

Former Al-Karama coalition MP, Rached Khiari, left prison this Saturday, November 22, 2025, after serving his entire sentence. His lawyer, Maître Samir Ben Amor, announced it yesterday in a Facebook post. This release marks the end of a legal period marked by several convictions for comments made on social networks.

An appeal judgment which cost him eight months

Khiari’s release comes after the execution of a verdict pronounced by the criminal chamber of the Tunis Court of Appeal. This court sentenced him to eight months in prison in two separate cases, both linked to accusations of “harming others” via social networks: six months for the first case, two months for the second.

This appeal judgment follows previous convictions. In February 2025, the Tunis Court of First Instance had already imposed a year in prison on Khiari for comments deemed offensive published on telecommunications platforms.

A heavy legal past

Rached Khiari’s legal troubles do not stop at this social media affair. For several years, he has been the target of various convictions:

He has already been sentenced to four months in prison for disseminating a person’s personal data without their consent. In December 2022, he was sentenced to three months in prison for criticizing the army, accused of damaging the military institution.

In addition, other heavier judgments had been handed down: for example, a two-year sentence for bad checks, as well as other convictions for defamation.

This series of sentences paints the portrait of a political figure constantly in conflict with the justice system, particularly around his public speech and his virulent criticism.
