Former Diplomat Abdallah Laabidi: consequences of the Soumoud

Former Diplomat Abdallah Laabidi delivered, Friday September 12, 2025, his analysis on the Soumoud flotilla and the reactions aroused by his arrival in Tunisia.

Guest on Jawhara FMhe considered that this initiative had undoubtedly irritated Israel and its allies. But according to him, beyond the media effect, his repercussions are likely to have tangible political consequences.

“Just see the rate of official visits to Tunisia: in the space of 48 hours, we welcomed two delegations representing camps completely opposed in their alliances and their interests,” he said.

The West, the Middle East and the question of institutions

Continuing her intervention, Laabidi highlighted a fundamental difference between Western countries and those of the Middle East: institutional solidity. He said that the United States is only interested in the Middle East because of its resources, adding that the lifespan of “mini-states” created in the region corresponds, according to him, to that of their natural wealth. He recalled that former American president Donald Trump had even suggested a sharing of the pilgrimage income.

Manifestations perceived as symbolic

The ex-diplomat also compared certain current struggles to symbolic acts without lasting impact. “Poland they defend today has disappeared from history for sixty years,” he recalled, before qualifying the demonstrations, the protests and the Soumoud flotilla as “folklorical” demonstrations, offering a provisional outlet to the oppressed populations.

A call for real change

In conclusion, Abdallah Laabidi said that instead of being satisfied with what he calls folk actions, the Arab peoples would gain more to work to transform their political regimes.
