Environmental crisis in Gabès: Kaïs Saïed promises “urgent” measures

The President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed, assured Friday that he was closely monitoring the critical environmental situation in Gabès, promising urgent and immediate solutions to stem the pollution that has affected the region for several decades.

During a meeting at the Carthage Palace with Ibrahim Bouderbala, president of the Assembly of People’s Representatives (ARP), and Imed Derbali, president of the National Council of Districts and Regions (CNRD), the head of state reviewed several major files, including the state’s social policy and the 2026 finance bill, recently transmitted to Parliament.

But it was the environmental crisis in Gabès which dominated the discussions. Saïed insisted on the need to break with traditional approaches and put in place a comprehensive strategy to sustainably address environmental problems in the region and throughout the country.

The president praised the civic sense of the inhabitants of Gabès, citing as an example a citizen who called on demonstrators to reopen the blocked roads between Aïn Salem, Sidi Boulbeba and Chench. He urged the population to support the security forces, believing that some are seeking to exploit the crisis for personal gain.

Kaïs Saïed also denounced the maneuvers of “plotters” in the pay of foreigners, whom he accused of wanting to slow down national successes. He reaffirmed the determination of the State to pursue the chosen path, based on national capacities and choices, and to keep Tunisia on the path to total liberation.
