The Minister of National Defense, Khaled Souihi, affirmed, at the end of the general debate held as part of the joint plenary session devoted to the presentation of the budget of the Ministry of Defense for 2026, that the military agreement between Tunisia and Algeria is not new.
Initially signed in 2001, it was simply updated to take into account recent developments and broaden the areas of cooperation, particularly in the fight against terrorism, cross-border crime and the security of common borders.
Souihi stressed that Tunisian-Algerian relations are based on a shared history and a solid strategic partnership, devoid of any political orientation or regional alignment. He added that strengthening military cooperation between the two countries constitutes a strategic choice, essential for the security and stability of the entire region.
Addressing the issue of scientific and technological development in the military field, the minister affirmed that modern wars are no longer won only by weapons and equipment, but also by intelligence, scientific research and technological innovation. In this context, he specified that support for national military production and industry is part of a strategy aimed at strengthening the autonomous capabilities of the Tunisian army.
Souihi also indicated that the ministry has created a military research center responsible for promoting applied research in areas linked to the specific needs of national defense, following a logic of transition from knowledge to production.
