While the number of road accidents decreases in Tunisia, the human assessment worsens. From January 1 until May 8, 2025, 388 people have lost their lives on Tunisian roads, against 381 to the same period in 2024, an increase of 1.84%, according to data from the National Observatory for Road Safety.

In parallel, the total number of accidents recorded during this period fell significantly, from 2103 in 2024 to 1628 in 2025. The number of injured also fell sharply, with 2125 victims against 2829 last year, a decrease of almost 25%.

The main causes of accidents remain unchanged. Inattention and lack of vigilance are responsible for 40.5% of accidents, 31.4% of deaths and 35.6% of the injured. Excessive speed comes second, involved in more than 15% of accidents, 22% of deaths and 18% of the injured.

Then come the non-compliance with priority, the reckless crossing of the roads, the dangerous changes of direction, risky overtaking and non-compliance with the right track.

The governorate of Tunis recorded the greatest number of accidents (164) and wounded (174), while that of Sfax is the deadliest with 47 deaths. Mahdia, for its part, lists 127 accidents and 170 injured.

The month of April was particularly dramatic, with 104 dead and 543 injured, while January remains the most accident -causing month with 427 accidents identified.
