Conspiracy against state security: Sentences of between 5 and 45 years in prison

The criminal chamber specializing in terrorism matters at the Tunis Court of Appeal delivered, at dawn this Friday, November 28, 2025, its final judgment in the so-called “plot against state security I” case. The verdicts cover a wide range of sentences from 5 to 45 years in prison, depending on the defendants’ circumstances.

An expected verdict

The Tunis Court of Appeal has ruled, after several months of proceedings, in one of the most followed cases on the political and judicial scene. According to a judicial source cited by the TAP agency, the judges handed down harsh sentences against the defendants considered to be under arrest at the time of the verdict, with sentences ranging from 10 years to 45 years in prison. One accused, however, benefited from a dismissal of the case, the court having decided not to retain the charges against him.

Variable sentences

For the defendants left free during the investigation and the trial, the sentences handed down ranged between 5 years and 35 years in prison, while two of them were acquitted by a judgment of dismissal of the case.

As for the accused on the run, the Court of Appeal confirmed the sentences initially handed down — 33 years in prison with immediate execution — while increasing the sanctions for some of them, bringing the maximum sentence to 43 years with immediate execution.

Financial sanctions and confiscation measures

In addition to the custodial sentences, the Court ordered in several cases the application of additional financial sanctions. These fines, of varying amounts depending on the individual cases, are accompanied by measures of confiscation of the assets of the accused concerned.

The funds seized concern sums deposited in accounts opened in various Tunisian financial institutions, in accordance with legal provisions governing cases linked to terrorism and attacks on state security.

Remember that in this case, 37 people were sentenced at first instance, last April, to sentences ranging from 4 to 66 years in prison, for serious charges such as conspiracy against the internal and external security of the State, formation and adherence to a terrorist conspiracy, or even acts of a terrorist nature.
