During the joint plenary session of Parliament and the National Council of Regions and Districts devoted to examining the budget of the Ministry of the Interior for 2026, several deputies insisted on the need to strengthen security resources and reform local governance.

Step up the fight against crime

The interventions largely focused on the fight against crime and prevention in schools. MEPs called for better equipping units to combat the spread of drugs in schools, and for creating new police stations to combat petty crime.

Several deputies focused their interventions on the reorganization of local authorities.

Tarek Rebii called for the holding of municipal elections and the review of the status of sector heads, while Mahmoud Laamari called for a review of the Local Authorities Code, reports the TAP agency.

For his part, Nour El-Houda called for the publication of the status of the general secretaries of municipalities and omdas, believing that institutional clarity is essential to the proper functioning of local administration.

Alert on security and migration issues

On the security front, Tarek Mahdi drew attention to the increased presence of sub-Saharan migrants in an irregular situation in Sfax, suggesting the creation of a specialized directorate to manage this issue.

Finally, Mohamed Ali Slimane mentioned 27 suspicious deaths in places of detention and a 9% increase in crime in 2025, calling on the ministry to improve its crisis management and institutional communication.
