The President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed, chaired, this Wednesday, October 15, 2025 in Bizerte, the ceremonial marking the 62nd anniversary of the evacuation of French troops from Tunisia. The day was marked by the laying of a wreath, the reading of the Fatiha at the martyrs’ cemetery and meetings with the citizens of the city.
The commemoration of the “Evacuation” recalls the departure of the last French soldier from Bizerte, which occurred on October 15, 1963, symbolizing the end of the colonial era in Tunisia. On this occasion, President Saïed also signed an amnesty decree covering 1,125 detainees, allowing the immediate release of 364 prisoners and granting conditional release to 1,035 others.
As part of his visit, President Saïed toured downtown Bizerte, where he met residents and listened to their concerns.
