The season of the cereal harvest in Ben Arous ended on an excellent assessment. More than 267,000 quintals of cereals have been harvested, an unprecedented figure in the region. Jalila Ben Hassine, head of the Great Cultures Service, affirms, in a declaration to TAP, that this total largely exceeds the initial forecasts, which were 237,000 quintals.
Durdy wheat represents 141,644 quintals. Tender wheat reaches 16,800 quintals. Barley, on the other hand, exceeds 104,000 quintals. The triticale amounts to 4,752 quintals.
The neighboring collection centers, in Jebel Oust (Zaghouan) and Siliana, received 98,000 quintals. They mainly welcomed durum wheat, tender wheat and barley.
Faced with this success, Jalila Ben Hassine requests the opening of collection centers in the governorate. This will facilitate the work of local farmers.
This year, 9,492 hectares were dedicated to cereal cultivation in Ben Arous. This surface is divided into 4,166 hectares of durum wheat, 600 hectares of tender wheat, 4,550 hectares of barley and 176 hectares of triticale.
