Back to Tunisia: QR code and smart traveler now essential

In 2024, the customs regularization of imported vehicles generated nearly 195 million dinars. This was announced by Elyes Belkhir, brigadier general and representative of Tunisian customs, this Thursday, July 3, 2025, during the program Midi Eco On the waves of Mosaic Radio FM.

A total of 23,036 cars were regularized. Among them, 10,858 were entirely exempt from customs duties.

Travelers advice

As the summer season approaches, General Belkhir has sent several recommendations to Tunisian travelers back to the country.

He recalled the importance of:

  • Declare the currencies transported;
  • Avoid leaving the gray card in the vehicle on board the boat;
  • Carry out remote procedures, via the customs site.

He also insisted on respecting the three control corridors on arrival:

  • Green for light control;
  • Orange for average control;
  • Red for in -depth control.

The official also warned against scam attempts. He recommends only contacting uniform agents or their hierarchical superiors.

Currency declaration

The entry of currencies in Tunisia is free, but an amount equal to or greater than 20,000 dinars must be declared.

If a traveler introduces a sum of less than 20,000 dinars, but wishes to leave with more than 5,000 dinars, he must declare it as soon as he entered the territory.

Place to digital

Customs now relies on digitalization to simplify its services.

Since June 1, 2025, travelers returning by boat must use the application “” “Smart Traveler». It is compulsory for:

  • Obtain temporary traffic authorization;
  • Declare personal effects.

These services, previously optional, are now accessible via the official website www.douane.gov.tn or the mobile application.

The traveler must:

  1. Access the E-Service section, then “individuals» ;
  2. Choose the “My Luggage” tab or “My license» ;
  3. Fill out the forms;
  4. Generate a QR code to present during customs.

New on board ferries

Procedures related to passports (requests or renewals) can now be done directly on board.

In addition, taxes on personal effects are payable exclusively by international bank card, via electronic terminal. Cash payments are no longer accepted.

These new features aim to strengthen transparency, reduce paper procedures and facilitate the passage of travelers.
