Access to water: Exceptional measures for Eid

A few days before Eid Al-Adha, a period of high water consumption, especially for domestic needs and sacrificial rites, the Tunisian authorities announce that they have taken exceptional measures to secure the supply of drinking water across the country.

During a visit made this Wednesday, June 4, 2025 in the governorate of Mahdia, the Secretary of State for Water Resources with the Minister of Agriculture, Hamadi Habib, said that “all the necessary precautions were taken to guarantee access to drinking water during Eid”. He insisted on the absolute priority granted to human consumption, ensuring that all tanks will be filled in anticipation of this religious holiday.

This initiative is part of a strategic management of hydraulic resources. The Nebhana dam, in the governorate of Kairouan, displays a stock currently exceeding 6 million cubic meters. Part of this reserve, or 1.85 million cubic meters, was specifically allocated to the supply of drinking water. In addition, additional resources have been mobilized to support irrigation systems in the governorates of Kairouan, Monastir, Mahdia and Sousse.

The Secretary of State also praised a “very positive” rainy season, especially in the Sahel regions, where precipitation has exceeded seasonal averages. A boon to strengthen water reserves after several years of drought.
