The defense of the president of the Free Destourian Party contests the charges and threatens to boycott the trial.

The trial of Abir Moussi, president of the Free Destourian Party (PDL), will once again be at the center of attention on Friday October 24, the date of the hearing scheduled before the 4th criminal chamber of the Court of First Instance of Tunis.

The defense indicated that it could boycott this hearing due to the seriousness of the accusations and the conditions of detention of its client.

During a press conference at the headquarters of the National Order of Lawyers, Me Ali Béjaoui, member of the defense collective, told the TAP agency that Ms. Moussi is being prosecuted in the case of the registry office of the Presidency of the Republic.

He denounced the basis of the accusation, based on article 72 of the Penal Code, which provides for penalties up to the death penalty, emphasizing the following:

“It is inconceivable that a simple administrative procedure would be considered a crime punishable by death.”

For his part, Me Nafaâ Laaribi, also a member of the collective, questioned the legitimacy of appointments within the judiciary, stressing that “the Tunisian courts operate today on the basis of memoranda, in violation of Decree-Law No. 11 of 2022 and article 121 of the Constitution”.

The defense collective also alerted to the state of health of the president of the PDL and requested that she be transported by ambulance from Bulla Regia prison (governorate of Jendouba) to the court, in order to be able to attend the hearing in good conditions.
