The president of the Alzheimer Tunisia association, Leïla Alouane, announced that a medication capable of treating the first stages of Alzheimer’s disease could see the light of day in the coming years. This announcement comes on the occasion of World Alzheimer’s World Day on September 21.
According to Leïla Alouane, this future medication would aim to slow down degeneration of the brain responsible for the disease. She recalls that, although the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s improved in Tunisia, it often remains late, with symptoms sometimes detected 10 to 20 years after their appearance. Memory disorders and behavioral changes are the first signs observed.
The situation in Tunisia
No official figures exist on the exact number of people affected. The World Health Organization (WHO), however, estimates that around 80,000 the number of cases diagnosed in the country.
For her part, the president of the Tunisian association fighting against Alzheimer, Afef Hammami, revealed that more than 100,000 people are directly affected by the disease in Tunisia.
Leïla Alouane insists on the importance of prevention, in particular via a healthy food, regular physical activity, intellectual stimulation. These measures help to delay the appearance of the disease and improve the quality of life of people at risk.
