The president of the association of “Friends of Carthage”, Saloua Jaziri Arfa, denounced what she describes as “repeated violations” of the Archaeological Site of Carthage, despite the existence of a law, dating from February 24, 1994, which protects these lands against anarchic constructions, flights, looting and illegal excavations aimed at extract archaeological pieces.
The president of the association of “Friends of Carthage”, said in an intervention granted on Radio Diwan FM, last Friday, that the majority of the land concerned are archaeological in nature, some belonging to the State and others to individuals.
She said that the association has filed a criminal complaint with the public prosecutor, accompanied by a request for appointment of an expert, in order to verify whether certain land is really the public domain.
She also announced the organization of a march, the second of its kind, scheduled for April 19, 2025 to 3:00 p.m. (avenue Roosevelt), under the slogan “I walk for Carthage”, aimed at alerting the authorities to the current dangers which threaten the archaeological site of Carthage.
Regarding anarchic constructions, she revealed that around 600 demolition decisions have not been executed, calling for responsible those who prevented their implementation. “We work that any construction in the area is subject to authorizations and respects the laws and regulations in force,” she said.
She urged the public prosecutor to apply the law without delay, to appoint experts dealing with the file with the greatest seriousness, and challenged the Kais President Saied to act quickly and firmly in favor of the archaeological lands.
Finally, she underlined the need to review the performance of the municipality, the municipal police and the National Heritage Institute, while demanding concrete accounts on the part of these structures.
