The Ministry of Health said in a statement that the Bechir Hamza University Hospital medical team succeeded, on April 16, 2025, to carry out the first complex cardiac surgery on a three -month -old infant.
This intervention, carried out in the new pediatric cardiac surgery service, marks a significant advance in the management of infantile cardiac pathologies in Tunisia.
The operation, carried out by a team specializing in surgery, resuscitation and anesthesia, was made possible thanks to the support of the medical teams of Gabès, Sfax and Tunis. The positive result of the intervention testifies to the effectiveness of collaborative work and modern equipment used.
The Ministry of Health welcomed this feat, stressing its importance to reduce the children’s waiting list requiring complex heart care, while limiting remedies abroad for these treatments.
This success is also part of a broader strategy aimed at strengthening medical specialties and modernizing health infrastructure in Tunisia, thus guaranteeing increasingly specialized care for young patients.
